In WA, retaining walls under 500mm are exempt from building permits on a standard residential block. Walls between 500mm and 1 metre need a building permit from a registered building surveyor. And anything over 1 metre needs a permit plus structural engineering drawings. So, it all depends on the height. There are exceptions. A low wall can still need approval if it sits within 1.5 metres of a boundary, pool
or other structure. WA's thresholds are lower than most other states. So, it's worth checking before work starts. Particularly in sandy soil areas where post embedment depth matters.
Waterwise, drought-tolerant species are the safer long-term choice. Particularly natives suited to sandy, free-draining soil. That doesn't mean a garden has to look bare or scrubby. Waterwise planting can still be layered, textured and lush-looking once it's established. Soil improvement makes a real difference too. Adding organic matter, wetting agents or a clay-based additive helps sandy soil hold moisture and nutrients rather than letting water drain straight through. We'll factor plant choice and soil prep into the design rather than treating them as an afterthought.
A new landscaped garden will need more attention during the first 6–12 months while plants establish. After that, a well-designed waterwise garden with native plants, reticulation and 50–100mm of mulch can be kept relatively low maintenance. Expect weeding every 2–4 weeks, particularly during the first year. Prune 2–4 times a year, and check mulch every 2–3 months. Top up when the layer drops below 50mm. Reticulation should be checked seasonally, with established gardens generally needing watering twice a week in Perth’s summer. Lawn areas will require more frequent mowing and maintenance than native garden beds.
Yes, in most cases. We'll work around structures, established trees and garden beds you want to keep, rather than assuming a full clear-out. Pool surrounds need a bit more care around waterproofing, fall and access, which we factor into the design and construction. If a tree's roots are likely to affect a retaining wall, path or drainage line, we'll flag that during the site visit so it's accounted for upfront rather than becoming a problem later.
Yes, landscaping can be completed around existing pools, established trees and garden beds. But the work needs to account for site constraints. Around pools, paving and garden areas should be designed to manage drainage and prevent soil or runoff entering the pool. For retained trees, excavation should avoid damaging structural roots; roots 20mm or larger are considered structural in the referenced AS 4970 guidance. The construction may require a minimum 100mm clearance around protected roots. Existing pool safety barriers must also remain compliant, with WA requirements generally applying to pools deeper than 300mm.
A small garden refresh takes between 1–2 weeks. While a full residential landscape with paving, retaining walls, reticulation and planting takes 4–8 weeks. Larger backyard transformations involving extensive retaining, earthworks or pool surrounds can take 6–12 weeks, with major projects extending to 3–6 months.
