Yes. Any new or modified driveway that crosses the verge, the section between the road and your property boundary, needs approval from your local council before work starts. Standard crossover width starts at around 3 metres, with a minimum concrete thickness of 100mm under WALGA's general guidelines. But exact requirements for width, gradient and drainage vary from council to council. It's worth checking with yours before locking in your design. We can talk you through what a compliant crossover looks like as part of your quote.
As a general rule, you can walk on it after about 24 hours. You should keep cars and heavy loads off a new driveway for at least 7 days. New concrete needs time to cure properly before it takes weight. Full strength takes closer to 28 days. So, it's worth going easy on heavy pot plants, trailers or a boat parked on a fresh slab in that first month. Your installer will confirm exact timing based on the mix and weather on the day.
Plain concrete is poured and given a smooth or broom finish. Exposed aggregate is washed back once it's partially cured. So, the stones within the mix are revealed at the surface. Giving it a textured, decorative look and a slip-resistant surface. Exposed aggregate costs more than plain concrete. But it hides stains, marks and minor surface wear far better. Which is why it's the more popular choice for driveways and pool surrounds across Perth.
Some hairline cracking is normal in any concrete slab, and nothing can guarantee against it completely. Since ground movement and weather both play a part. What we can control is the preparation. A properly compacted base, reinforcing mesh through the slab, and control joints cut at the right spacing all work together to manage where and how concrete cracks as it cures and settles. Paving relies on the same principle. A solid, well-compacted base underneath stops pavers from rocking, sinking or lifting over time.
Yes, provided the existing surface is flat, structurally sound and free of major cracking. We'll check the slab's condition and levels during your quote. In some cases, a thin paving product can be bonded straight on top. In others, it's more reliable to remove the old surface first. Especially if drainage or falls need correcting. We'll recommend whichever approach holds up best long-term rather than whatever's quickest to install.
